How the commute estimate works

Our commute time calculator uses straight-line distance (Haversine formula) to estimate travel time between your points of interest and rental properties. This gives you a quick planning guide, though actual travel time may vary.

  • Driving (Urban): Assumes 25 km/h average speed for city traffic conditions
  • Driving (Mixed): Assumes 35 km/h for mixed urban/suburban areas
  • Walking: Assumes 5 km/h walking pace

The radius circles on the map show the approximate area within your selected time threshold. Properties within this area are highlighted, while those outside are dimmed.

Tips for choosing a realistic travel time in Kenya

  • Nairobi traffic: During rush hours (7-9 AM, 5-7 PM), add 20-30% to estimated times
  • Distance matters: For distances over 15 km, consider using "Driving (Mixed)" mode
  • Multiple points: Setting both Point A and Point B helps you find rentals convenient to both locations
  • Time buffer: Add 10-15 minutes buffer to your threshold for a more comfortable commute
  • Public transport: If using matatus or buses, actual times may be longer due to stops and routes
